Sketch photo to DXF: dimensions and CAD export guide

Reconstruct simple flat parts from sketches or PDFs using dimensions. Review the outline, holes and questions before DXF export.

Have a part drawing on paper and need a CAD or sheet-metal file? Start with a photo containing the dimensions instead of redrawing the whole part.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a sketch, PDF or manual shape

Open a source with readable dimensions or add a shape manually. File selection and area marking are local. Choose one intended part; a page frame and multiple outlines do not determine the number of parts.

  2. Send and inspect recognition

Choose “Upload and analyze drawing” only after consent. Compare the source with the CAD preview, outlines, holes and labels. Recognition is a proposal: correct the feature type, values and associations.

  3. Confirm dimensions and relations

Click a line or vertex once; double-click to select the outline. To position a hole, pick the hole and a part edge. Choose centre-to-edge or hole-edge-to-part-edge; the arrow shows which distance you are entering. Check the value and unit.

  4. Resolve questions and conflicts

Questions form numbered steps with Previous and Next. Save the answer, check the preview and continue. Conflicting sources need correction or explicit rejection; the tool does not average them.

  5. Add material and thickness when needed for 3D

Material and thickness are optional for a 2D outline. A solid requires explicitly confirmed thickness. Do not infer it from photo appearance; missing or uncertain information must remain visible.

  6. Review preview and generate the selected export

Check outline, holes, positions and units before choosing an available format and generation. 2D DXF describes the outline; 3D formats require a valid model and thickness. Download the file and inspect it in the target CAD application.

Dimensions take precedence over photo proportions

Two differently photographed sketches can describe the same part. Exact reconstruction uses confirmed facts and relations. An ambiguous hole position, direction or reflection requires a user decision.

Lines, arcs and angles: establish intent before dimensions

An uneven stroke can propose a line, arc or circle. Review the highlighted connections and confirm their meaning. Similarity alone does not confirm tangency or a dimension.

For two rays and a readable angle marking, check the association and OA–OB direction. If a radius, diameter or arc sweep cannot be read, the tool asks for the missing value. The form presents one question at a time; detailed coordinates are an advanced option.

The engine solves confirmed relations in one model. It does not turn pixels into manufacturing millimetres or average conflicting declarations. Unsupported shapes require clarification or an explicit manual edit.

A curved edge and corner fillets

One curved edge and two filleted corners are different shapes. Corners need their own R values. A semicircle is a separate explicit choice.

After the envelope is confirmed, the tool may propose R fitted to the sketch stroke. Accept the estimate or enter your own radius. Confirmation preserves its origin and uncertainty; DXF marks estimated R as approximate. A photo does not become a precise measurement.

Precise model versus approximate outline

A photo-derived outline retains its estimate status. Relabelling or confirming a shape does not automatically turn it into a measurement. Resolve stated gaps and conflicts before precise export; do not replace them with a guessed scale.

A hole or dimension is missing, or export is blocked

Return to the selected feature and inspect recognition. Missing hole position needs a dimension or confirmed relation such as centering. Conflicting facts require source correction. Follow complexity guidance to reduce area or resolution; do not silently omit outlines.

Who is it for?

  • Workshops
  • Sheet-metal part preparation

Input

  • PNG/JPEG image, SVG or PDF
  • Dimensions and user answers

Output

  • 2D DXF; STEP for a flat solid after confirming thickness.

Capabilities

  • One form for the drawing, geometry and dimensions.
  • Vertices, lines, rounded corners and hole contours as interpretations to review.
  • Questions about missing or uncertain information.
  • Pick hole-to-edge distances on the sketch with a dimension arrow.
  • Choose one curved edge or independent corner radii; a proposed R needs review.

Limitations

  • Beta version; handwriting may need manual completion.
  • Sketch proportions do not replace confirmed dimensions.
  • The initial 3D scope is a flat part with thickness. Bending and unfolding remain outside this scope.

Example use

A rectangle drawn like a square but labelled 800 × 300 mm must be reconstructed as 800 × 300 mm. Dimensions take priority over sketch appearance.

Questions and answers

How do I create DXF from a hand-drawn sketch?

Upload the dimensioned sketch, review the proposed geometry and fill missing information. Confirm the model and choose DXF. Dimensions determine the result, not pixel distances.

Can a photo produce a 3D model?

A dimensioned sketch of a flat part can supply its outline and holes. Confirmed thickness enables a simple extrusion. This is not a full 3D scan; bends are outside the current scope.

Do I need to answer a question for every dimension?

Detected data is prepared for review and editing. Fill missing information and resolve uncertain readings or relations. Handwritten text recognition is not infallible.
